Tsurugajo Castle

Tsurugajo Castle is the symbol of Aizu Wakamatsu City. In 2011， the roof of the castle tower was replaced with red tiles， restoring the castle to its original appearance at the end of the Edo period. The castle tower has been turned into a local museum， where various historical materials of Aizu are on display.

The impregnable and famous castle loved as a symbol of the Aizu clan

Originating from Higashi-Kurokawa-kan， built by Naomori Ashina in 1384， Ujisato Gamo built the first full-scale castle tower in eastern Japan in 1593， and named it ”Tsurugajo” (Tsurugajo Castle). During the Boshin War in 1868， the castle withstood a month-long onslaught by the new government forces and became known as an impregnable and famous castle.

The cherry trees at Tsurugajo were planted in 1908 to commemorate the establishment of the 65th Regiment of the Army Infantry in Aizu Wakamatsu City. In the park， approximately 1，000 cherry trees， mainly Someiyoshino， Edohigan， Shidare-zakura， and Yamazakura， are in full bloom. During the blooming period， the park is also lit up and visitors can enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms at night.
